CEO’s WIC Program Holding Fit WIC Days
Posted July 16, 2013CEO’s WIC program will be offering “Fit WIC Days” this summer on July 12th and August 9th. Fit WIC Days encourage families to engage in active play as a way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. CEO WIC staff hold the Fit WIC Days in Troy’s Prospect Park, where participating families play games that encourage movement, social interaction, and the development of gross motor skills as a way to support a healthy, active lifestyle and help prevent obesity.
“Here at CEO’s WIC program, we promote a healthy lifestyle and exercise on a regular basis,” says Jessica Griswold, who is a WIC Nutritionist. “However, there is a more significant impact when parents can watch us modeling active play, versus talking about it in an office environment. We hope to inspire a lifelong love of enjoying outdoor green spaces in our community and living a healthy, active lifestyle for the parents and children who attend.”
CEO’s WIC program offers nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and access to healthy food. WIC supports the health of pregnant and postpartum women, and their children up to the age of five. Fathers, stepparents, grandparents and foster parents may all apply for their children. The program distributes vouchers which can be used specifically for purchasing nutritious foods and formula from designated stores. WIC has been shown to improve the health of pregnant, postpartum, and nursing women, and their young children. The foods provided through WIC are a good source of important nutrients that are often missing from the diets of women and young children. WIC participants have longer, healthier pregnancies and fewer premature births.
