The Popular “Adopt-A-Family” Holiday Initiative Gets a Makeover

Troy, NY – November 15, 2013 – CEO’s popular “Adopt-A-Family” holiday program is ramping up for the 2013 holiday season, but this year, the program has a different look. The Adopt-A-Family program provides holiday gifts to families in need who are receiving CEO’s services. Traditionally, generous individual and corporate donors have “adopted” families, purchasing gifts which CEO distributed right before Christmas.

“We are seeking donations to help us support our families in need this holiday season. We are looking for unwrapped new and gently used toys and educational items for children from birth to age 17,” said Erin Bradley, CEO’s Assistant Director of Operations. “We are so thankful to our generous supporters who help us make the holidays brighter for those living in such difficult circumstances.”

However, in an effort to create a larger impact and a more empowering experience, CEO has joined forces with Unity House of Troy, another human services organization, to create the “Adopt-A-Family store.”

The new program model will create a retail-like experience for families served by both CEO and Unity House. Donations will be organized by age-group suitability, and parents will be able to “shop” (at no cost) for their children for the holidays.

“CEO’s mission has always been one of empowerment and self-sufficiency,” said Katherine Maciol, President/CEO of the Commission on Economic Opportunity. “We love to spread joy during the holiday season and help those who are truly in need. This year, we wanted to create a different experience for our customers. By offering this store model, we can provide a welcoming and more dignified experience, where our customers will have the freedom to choose the gifts that best meet the unique needs of their families.”

Donations can be dropped off at CEO’s Joseph L. Bruno Family Resource Center at 2328 Fifth Avenue, or at Unity House’s new Front Door location, located on 2431 Sixth Avenue, both in Troy. Individuals and organizations looking to support the Adopt-A-Family program through donations of cash, gift cards, or by organizing a toy drive can contact Erin Bradley at (518) 272-6012 Ext. 239 or via email at ebradley@ceo-cap.org.
